Electric air taxi tests to start in Florida

This is a massive milestone for the “flying car” dream. Just yesterday, March 9, 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the FAA officially greenlit Florida as a primary hub for the new eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP).

Florida is one of the key states selected to move these prototypes out of the “experimental lab” phase and into real-world skies.

What’s Happening in Florida?

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will lead a statewide effort to test these aircraft in three distinct phases:

  1. Cargo & Logistics: Starting with medical supplies and specialized freight.
  2. Emergency Response: Testing how these vehicles can assist in medical emergencies and disaster relief.
  3. Passenger Services: Moving toward actual air taxi commutes for the public.

The Major Players

Several top-tier firms have been authorized to fly their prototypes in the state as part of this program:

  • Archer Aviation: Will be testing their Midnight aircraft, which is designed to carry four passengers and a pilot.
  • Joby Aviation: Planning to demonstrate quiet, all-electric flights, with a goal of starting some early operations later this year.
  • Beta Technologies & Electra Aero: Both are also confirmed partners for the Florida project, focusing on both regional and urban missions.

Why Florida?

Florida has been positioning itself for this moment for years. SunTrax (located in the Auburndale/Polk County area) has already established the nation’s first Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Aerial Test Track. This infrastructure, combined with favorable weather and a supportive state government, has made it the “Waymo moment” for aviation right in your backyard.

The FAA expects the public to start seeing these flights in the skies as early as summer 2026.
