Did you know the number of Americans moving to Florida has significantly slowed down?
Yes, marking a sharp decline from the pandemic-era boom, Americans have decided Florida is no longer the state they wish to move to. Net domestic migration to the state fell from 310,892 in 2022, to just 22,517 in 2025. That is a 93% decrease according to the U.S. Census Bureau data. Florida has dropped from the top spot in domestic migration to rank number eight, trailing states like Texas, Utah, and North Carolina.
Some of the key reasons for the decline include:
Florida’s median home price increased from $298,100 in 2020 to $412,100 in 2025, making it less affordable. High property insurance premiums and rising rents are major deterrents. Also, the shift back to in-office work from several years of remote working has tied many professionals to their original locations, reducing relocation opportunities.
Other major reasons that many Floridians also complain about as well, Residents gridlocked traffic, hyper-development, and a loss of the “laid-back” lifestyle, especially in cities and their suburbs. Repeated hurricanes and climate risks have increased insurance costs and discouraged long-term investment in property.
Despite the drop in domestic migration, Florida remains a top destination for international immigrants and financially wealthy buyers, particularly from abroad. However, the overall trend reflects a market normalization after years of rapid growth, with the state transitioning from a migration hotspot to a more sustainable, slower-growth model.
