The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has several significant nighttime detours scheduled for the I-4 and SR 33 (Commonwealth Avenue) interchange in Lakeland starting this Monday.
These closures are part of the ongoing $197 million reconstruction project to improve the interchange and add wildlife crossings.
Upcoming Detour Schedule
Dates: Monday night, April 20, through Tuesday morning, April 21, 2026
Time: 9:30 PM to 6:00 AM
| Closure Location | Detour Route |
| SR 33 Northbound (at I-4) | Motorists will be detoured via University Blvd. |
| SR 33 Northbound (Trucks) | Heavy truck traffic will be routed onto I-4 Eastbound to Exit 559. |
| I-4 Eastbound Exit 38 Off-Ramp | Drivers will be directed to use Exit 33 (SR 33/Lakeland Hills Blvd) instead. |
| I-4 Eastbound On-Ramp (from SR 33) | Southbound SR 33: Follow local detour signs. Northbound SR 33: Use SR 559 to access I-4 Eastbound. |
Additional Local Impacts
- Speed Limits: The speed limit remains reduced in the work zone. Please use caution as crews are also working on the SR 33 (Lakeland Hills Blvd) reconstruction further south.
- Lake Hollingsworth: Unrelated to the I-4 project, milling and paving will also begin on Monday, April 20, on Lake Hollingsworth Drive, which may cause additional congestion if you are heading toward the college area.
FDOT suggests allowing extra travel time and keeping an eye out for portable message boards, as these schedules are always weather-dependent.
