It’s a situation local drivers have felt for a while, but the numbers now back it up. Kathleen Road (CR 35A) has officially been flagged as the top crash hotspot for county-owned roads in Polk County.

Recent data from the Polk Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) reveals a staggering 366 crashes occurred on just a 1.5-mile stretch of the road between 2020 and 2025.
Why It’s So Dangerous
Planners and residents have pointed to several “pressure cooker” elements that contribute to the high incident rate:
- Lane Bottlenecks: The road frequently shifts from four lanes down to two, creating “friction points” where merging cars often collide.
- Poor Lighting: A high number of wrecks happen at night, suggesting that visibility for drivers and pedestrians is a major safety gap.
- Geometry & Speed: Awkward roadway angles combined with heavy traffic volumes lead to frequent rear-end collisions.
The Plan for Fixes
Under the TPO’s Vision Zero initiative, officials are moving from analysis to action. Here is what is currently in the works:
- Safety Workshops: The TPO held “Speak Up for Safer Streets” workshops in March 2026 to gather direct input from residents on specific trouble spots near Sleepy Hill and other residential areas.
- Engineering Upgrades: Proposed countermeasures include installing stronger LED lighting, upgrading crosswalks, and adjusting lane transitions to be more “forgiving” of driver error.
- Expansion & Funding: A $3 million federal appropriation was recently secured for the design and permitting of a Kathleen Road extension. This project aims to improve both capacity and safety from Duff Road toward Highway 98.
- New Infrastructure: Polk County recently approved a $5 million land purchase for a new North Lakeland Government Center off Kathleen Road. This has added urgency to local infrastructure needs, as residents are already concerned about how the center will impact the existing traffic and flooding issues in the area.
What to Watch For
While major construction won’t happen overnight, keep an eye on upcoming Polk TPO board meetings. Now that the federal funding is in place, the study’s findings are being converted into a specific budget and timeline for “quick-build” fixes like better signage and lighting before the larger widening projects begin.
Undercover traffic management. Look into it. Honestly. People in my neighborhood could not give two you-know-whats about Florida Traffic Laws, especially Noise Abatement. Your pals in Cali have some interesting strategies. Spotter with posse waiting down the road very effective.
I live near Kathleen and it is my favorite road to cross. I do not believe that the accidents are due to better lighting or narrow roads. I believe people like to ride the road for the curves and the young ones love to speed on the road, but some are surprised by the traffic lights that may suddenly change and cause a car to stop right in the middle of their speeding up! I travel this road everyday and I do believe there are more and more people using this location due to the new community homes. I believe signs and bigger signs should be placed with warnings to drivers that speeding can cause accidents due to sudden traffic light changes. Bigger led lights won’t due the trick, maybe for the rural entries into smaller Kathleen roads, but the wide open roads are loved by the truckers and young drivers. I am not a fan of cameras, but believe in the presence of people. A good cop during high traffic hours may calm the drivers into compliance and save lives.
