The Lakeland City Commission voted on Monday, May 4, 2026, to decrease the fuel charge for Lakeland Electric customers, which will take effect on June 1, 2026.
The adjustment lowers the fuel charge by $5.00, moving it from $62.00 down to $57.00 per 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh). This move follows a commitment made earlier this year to stabilize the utility’s fuel reserves after a significant cold snap in early 2026 drove up natural gas prices.
Residential Rate Impact (1,000 kWh)
For a typical residential customer, the total monthly bill will decrease by about $5.00:

Why the Rate is Changing
The fuel charge is a “pass-through” cost, meaning Lakeland Electric passes the market cost of natural gas directly to customers without any markup or profit.
- Reserve Stabilization: The utility intentionally kept rates higher during the milder spring months (April and May) when power usage is generally lower. This allowed them to rebuild fuel reserves that were depleted during the winter.
- Summer Relief: By rebuilding those reserves now, the commission is able to lower the rate just as the summer heat begins, which typically leads to higher overall electricity usage for air conditioning.
