The City of Lakeland is officially moving forward with the construction of Fire Station 8, a highly anticipated project to serve the growing needs of northwest Lakeland.
Here are the key details on the project:
Groundbreaking and Timeline
- Groundbreaking: A ceremony is scheduled for June 4, 2026.
- Completion: The construction contract mandates “substantial completion” within 395 days (which puts the opening in the summer of 2027).
- Contractor: The Lakeland City Commission unanimously approved a $7.4 million budget and awarded the contract to local firm Rodda Construction.
Location and Features
- Where: The new station will sit on a 2.3-acre plot at the southwest corner of Sleepy Hill Road and Mall Hill Drive.
- First of its kind: This will be the first Lakeland fire station located north of Interstate 4.
- Equipment & Staffing: The 8,500-square-foot facility is designed to withstand hurricane-force winds and will house an Advanced Life Support (ALS) fire engine, an ALS emergency medical quick-response vehicle, and an incident supervisor. Six employees will initially staff it with room for future expansion.
Impact on Public Safety
The push for Station 8 comes after years of advocacy from residents and city officials, noting extended response times in the city’s northern sector.
- Balancing the Load: Currently, Fire Station 3 handles a disproportionately large share of the city’s emergency calls. Station 8 is expected to take on between 3,600 and 5,000 calls annually, significantly reducing the burden on Stations 3 and 6.
- Faster Response: By redistributing the call volume, the Lakeland Fire Department aims to more consistently meet its goal of a four-to-six-minute response time, not just in the immediate Northwestern District, but across the city.
