Lakeland Linder is definitely experiencing a major growth phase, but the major hubs aren’t actually seeing a decline in passengers — what they are experiencing is a severe decline in passenger experience, which is exactly what Lakeland is capitalizing on.
Here is a breakdown of what is actually happening in the Central Florida aviation market.
The Lakeland Boom
After more than a decade without commercial service, Lakeland Linder (LAL) is having a serious moment.
When Avelo Airlines launched commercial flights out of LAL in the summer of 2024, it marked a turning point. The airport successfully positioned itself as a convenient, low-stress alternative for the rapidly growing Polk County population. The demand has been so strong that by late 2025, the airport had to implement upgraded paid parking systems just to manage the influx of travelers and visitors.
The Reality at Major Hubs
The premise that major airports are facing a passenger decline is a bit of a misconception. While Tampa International (TPA) did see a temporary dip of about one million passengers in early 2025 — largely due to severe weather events and the timing of spring break — both major hubs are pushing absolute limits in 2026:
- Orlando International (MCO): The airport just hit an all-time record of 58 million passengers in early 2026. During the peak of spring break, they processed over 212,000 travelers in a single day.
- Tampa International (TPA): TPA is gearing up for a massive summer in 2026, expecting over 6.1 million passengers between Memorial Day and mid-August.
The Convenience Factor
If the major hubs are breaking records, why does it feel like they are struggling? Because their infrastructure is buckling under the weight of the demand.
MCO suffered a staggering 26.4% delay rate during the 2025 holiday season, and the 2026 spring break saw days with over 300 delayed flights as airlines struggled to manage the volume. For travelers, this means massive crowds, missed theme park reservations, and long security lines.
This contrast is the exact reason Lakeland Linder is thriving. It operates on the “crawl, walk, run” philosophy — offering a smaller scale that guarantees the convenience, accessibility, and reliability that the mega-hubs have lost to congestion.
Probably because they’re giving it away for pennies on the dollar. Thanks to you and me, the taxpayers of this area.
