Did you Know?

Did you know that the Florida Legislature is considering a $4 Million budget proposal to install artificial intelligence (AI) for auditing SNAP benefit applications?

The initiative, included in the state’s delayed $115 billion budget, aims to reduce the program’s current 15% error rate which ismore than double the federal target to avoid potential federal penalties exceeding $1 Billion.

Florida state officials and the Department of Children and Families (DCF) argue that AI machine learning will identify costly data errors, pinpoint root causes, and protect both federal and Florida state taxpayer dollars. If the state fails to lower its error rate under new federal rules, it could be forced to cover the cost of mistaken payments, shifting hundreds of millions in liability to Florida taxpayers. The budget provision directs the department to completely locate a vendor by September 1, 2026, to analyze eligibility determinations and recommend operational improvements.

Advocates and security experts warn that alleged algorithmic glitches may wrongly deny benefitsto struggling families, leaving children hungry. While some support the technology if it speeds up certification, critics emphasize that AI may fail to understand complex, one-on-one financial emergencies that require human judgment. Security experts stress the need for strict protections to ensure data accuracy and prevent the inadvertent penalization of eligible recipients.
