This is a massive milestone for Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR). For years, the department—one of the busiest in the entire state of Florida—didn’t have a dedicated space of its own. Firefighters literally had to borrow locations or pull over next to random open fields just to practice hooking up to hydrants.
The brand-new, $16 million state-of-the-art training center in Winter Haven changes everything.
The Details at a Glance
- The Scale: A 30,000-square-foot facility situated on a expansive campus (spanning 10 to 15 acres).
- “The Beast of the East”: The facility features the largest burn tower in the entire nation, giving crews an unprecedented environment to simulate intense, real-world structural fires.
- All-in-One Training: It includes advanced Emergency Medical Services (EMS) simulation labs for EMTs and paramedics, physical fitness facilities, and dedicated classrooms.
Because Polk County’s population is exploding, having an entirely in-house training ground allows the department’s 1,000-plus personnel to run drills repeatedly until they have them down perfectly before ever stepping onto a real emergency scene. Leadership also noted that this campus will help establish a fresh, professional identity for the department as they continue aggressive recruitment efforts.
Future phases for the campus are already being eyed to add specialized training props for hazardous materials (hazmat) and complex search-and-rescue operations.
