DeSantis Pushes for Special Session After Amendment 3

By Staff

DeSantis wants lawmakers back before January 1 to stop local governments from finding another way into your wallet after Amendment 3. But Florida’s incoming legislative leaders have already signaled they would rather slow down.

The governor wants a special session to pass a taxpayer bill of rights, arguing local governments should not be able to get around the homestead tax cut by taxing residents another way. No session date is set. Before the election, incoming Senate President Jim Boyd said it could wait until January so the new administration has a say. Incoming House Speaker Sam Garrison said he would rather be right than quick.

Amendment 3 raises the nonschool homestead exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. Those are exemption amounts, not dollars off your bill. The next fight is over the rules around that relief. Should lawmakers put those protections in place before January 1, or leave them to Governor-elect Byron Donalds and the new Legislature?
