Letter: Puppy Adopted from Polk Animal Shelter Needs Help

I adopted a puppy from Polk Animal Shelter over the weekend. She is extremely sick. I’m not sure she will make it. I took her to the vet yesterday… I have given her four doses of antibiotics she was prescribed, but she’s doing worse today.

I feel she needs a long stay at a vet office where she can get fluids and they can monitor her. I’m exhausted and don’t know what else to do as she will no longer eat.

Does anyone know of a vet office that won’t cost me thousands to keep her and can help this puppy survive? The vet office I took her to did not suggest she stay there. I just feel helpless at this time. I’m open to all suggestions.

  1. What is wrong with the veterinarian.
What kind of excuse will they come up with right now the list is long and endless.

  2. I adopted my dog Murphy from PC Animal Control. I picked him up on a Friday late afternoon and Saturday morning he was very sick. Called Animal Control early and they told me to bring him right in. Their vet treated him and sent us home with medication no charge for anything. He improved rapidly. So please call them first thing in the morning and tell them what is happening.

  3. I had placed a hold on this puppy last week Tuesday. I went to see her on Thursday and when I went to visit with her on Saturday, someone had screwed up and sent her to the adoption event. As I was waiting to see her at the shelter at 10 AM, she was being adopted at the Mega Event. I was devastated as I had visited with her a couple of times already. I hope she makes it. Please reach out to Care Animal Clinic in Lakeland. They are caring and reasonable. I will donate to her care.

  4. Please post this on several threads on Facebook and even on Next door app. Maybe take her to another vet and then ask the public to call the vet office and possibly d9nate to the care of this puppy.

  5. When is the county going to allocate the proper funding to make their animal shelters habitatal, properly staffed, LARGER or more than one, clean and Humane!?? They are the 4th highest kill shelter in the nation. The conditions in which these animal are housed are literally criminal! If they were called to a home that housed like them, those people would be criminally charged. The county needs to step up and allocate more funding to run this shelter appropriately!!!

    1. No cameras or volunteers are allowed at Animal Control, even though Shelters in other counties have 100rds of volunteers and said that they depend on them. The animals need the love and attention that volunteers can give.

  6. Polk County lacks local ordinances to regulate commercial sales and breeding, allowing the overpopulation problem to grow unchecked. Animal Control dumps the consequences onto the community by adopting out sick animals and failing to implement basic quarantine protocols used successfully in other counties. In a tough economy where residents struggle to afford basic necessities like gas, citizens should not have to foot the bill for preventable illnesses. The county needs to follow basic protocols, accept help from outside animal welfare and advocacy groups, and designate specific funding for shelter improvements rather than burying money in a general fund.

  7. Has this puppy gotten help? Lake Forest Veternary Hospital in Avon Park and Ft Meade Animal Clinic in Ft Meade, are both very good and reasonable. The vets and staff are kind and caring.
